A test with the desktop-CD made no obvious problems (it's a HD-failure that might occur more often when the program is installed on the HD and not on CD, ha-ha). I can also confirm starting gparted reproduces the dmesg output normally seen after (long) boot up. on all of my drives in /lib/udev/rules.d/80-udisks.rules, and I've disabled hdparm for them in /lib/udev/rules.d/85-hdparm.rules, but I still get IDENTIFY DEVICE errors on boot, shutdown and reboot.
