I guess, I'd try using a different external ROM drive and/or USB cable too. Could that be a problem with the mobo? Every SP installation creates a restore point prior making changes to the system for such cases where the installation is interrupted or corrupted. Check that the Windows 8 Feature and MSI Fast Boot is disabled in the CMOS/BIOS menu as well. I did use Boot Camp to make a USB. I've installed XP on Lion myself using the steps above and it worked just fine on my 2010 iMac with Lion.
So, I did the alt-reboot thing and booted back into Mac OS X - I can see the Bootcamp partition and all the files on it in Mac OS X and Can anyone help me out here? I tried connecting my screen with a VGA cable because I read HDMI was bugging. some articles giving some hints that 0xc0190036 is caused by the target file to be patched during SP1 installation being CORRUPTED. Resolution - disable any and all background HDD defragmentation programs before attempting SP1 install! I left it overnight to see if it was just taking a while but still nothing.
