Following the success of one update, I tried the Windows Update under All Programs and it started working and downloaded & installed all 172 missing updates. This update contains some improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Once that was done, I was able to run Windows Update again, and it found new updates which installed quickly and flawlessly. I found a way round it, though, that worked for me, as follows: Download the files listed in Solution 1 (i.e. 'save' rather than 'open') Install NTLIte from http://www.askvg.com/download-nlite-for-windows-7-windows-8-and-windows-8-1/ Click on Is checking the return value of printf important? Steps 2.1 and 2.2 resolved it completely.

I'm not arrogant enough to say that this will fix your problem. Windows Update Client For Windows 7 it's stuck at the install below. However, w/o disabling Windows Update Agent prior to installing/running, it won't install. Found your advice after a bit of a search and after a few failed attempts to fix the problem.
