I have been searching forever and method 2 did the trick!!! Or you can install the updates immediately by clicking "Restart Now." That being said, there is a workaround to the must-always-update-immediately rule -- assuming you have Windows Pro. Dell 15XPS laptop HD died, replaced drive (WD Blue 750 GB) and reinstalled from the Recovery Image (no Windows DVD with system). It turns out I needed to turn it back on (Control Panel > Windows Defender), in order for the Windows Updates to do their thing. That's an odd bug. You'll need to be on the Windows 10 Desktop to do this. From Settings, tap or click on Update & security. Choose Windows Update from the menu on the left, assuming it's not WU finally worked again - defender worked again also and I re-installed.
