I searched a lot on the net but could not find an easy solution. This situation reminded my why I switched to Linux a few years ago. It turns out I needed to turn it back on (Control Panel > Windows Defender), in order for the Windows Updates to do their thing. That's an odd bug. You'll need to be on the Windows 10 Desktop to do this. From Settings, tap or click on Update & security. Choose Windows Update from the menu on the left, assuming it's not WU finally worked again - defender worked again also and I re-installed.
